Case For Optimism hosted by Kaleider

An invitation to artists and leaders.

Its 8:30 in the morning. I'm sitting on the grass in the centre of Exeter between paths of concrete, which themselves weave between the web of wider paths of Tarmac interrupted by shelters, which protect us and our belongings and the new objects we desire from the rain that will turn the grass to mud and the sun that will turn it to dust and the both that will hold it in life, in balance. The people stick to the paths. The cars to the Tarmac. What world have we designed? Did we design it? Are we falling towards a future we believe is inevitable and beyond our collective design? Do we think someone, somewhere will sort it out?

I want to ask these questions without frightening people into dismissal. I want to cradle the questions in such a way that we can turn and face them without freezing in their glare.

But I've noticed it's not easy.

On 6th July Kaleider has invited Lucy Neal, Teo Greenstreet and Hilary Jennings to come and hold an event they've been delivering across the UK called Case For Optimism. We've invited Paul Allen from the Centre for Alternative Technology and Professor Tim Lenton from University of Exeter to bring the elephants into the room. And together, with the help of Lucy, Teo and Hilary, we'll discuss our practice as artists and cultural leaders, with the elephants right there with us.

This is not a movement or a campaign; Kaleider is a new production company for live performance based in Exeter and we'd like to invite you to join us in this conversation. Case for Optimism is for leaders in the arts and cultural sector and those who seek to maximise their creative response to the great challenges of our time: the ongoing financial crisis, the end of the oil age, resource depletions, and the challenge of climate change.

The event will take place at Thornlea in the Department of Drama at University of Exeter. You'll get full directions when you book. We are asking for a contribution of £20 from individuals and £30 from those attending from organisations towards the direct costs of the event. We'll supply lunch and refreshments.

Places are limited and likely to fill up fast. You can book your place here.

If you have any questions, dietary requirements or would just like some more information please email emily@kaleider.com
